A primary standard, as it relates to flowmeters, is one that is based on direct and measurable linear dimensions, such as the length and diameter of a cylinder, which will not change over time. For a complete answer to this question, see Redefining Sample Pump Flow Measurement Technical Note.

How do you calibrate samplers like cyclones and similar size-selective samplers?

Calibration Option 1- Preferred Option. The most accurate calibration procedure is to use the calibration adapter designed specifically for the sampler. The pump should be connected to the suction port of a calibrator with the sampler/media/cal adapter assembly in line between the calibrator and the pump.

Calibration Option 2 - Calibration jars can be used if there is no other option. However, jars may introduce error into calibration because of dead volume inside the calibration jar. Use the smallest jar possible if this option must be used.

Can the representative sample media used for calibration be used more than once?

Yes. Most users keep on-hand sorbent tubes and filters of various types labelled "calibration unit." They use them for months.…

Yes. Most users keep on-hand sorbent tubes and filters of various types labelled "calibration unit." They use them for months. Calibration media is only used to mimic the back pressure of the collection media.
